Unhappy Solved: Computer Stuck in Reboot Loop
Hello,

My Dell 4700 is stuck in a reboot loop, everytime it gets past teh xp logo loading screen (before blue welcome screen), it reboots. I tried to go to Windows Recovery console with a XP CD but every time after i hit "r", it goes to a blue screen. Any suggestions? Before this I had error messages about memory and I reseated the memory chips. That problem is now gone but now I have this problem.

Reseat the memory chips again.

If the same thing happens, pull out extra chips and try booting with only one.

Also, anytime you reseat memory chips, go into the bios setup, be sure that the total amount shows there, save changes coming out.

I checked them individually and they are fine..except it took me a few times each to have them seated properly (a beep code and light diagnostics if its not).

Now I start up and I believe some files on my hard drive got corrupted due to a sudden crash and reboot earllier. Running a chkdsk from xp cd now...not getting blue screen so far.

Try chkdsk first. Then a repair install next.

Also, can you start in safe mode with better results?

I did not try that because when starting up regularly before I got messages of files that were corrupt so I knew I needed to repair.

Screen froze after repair. Stuck at "saving configuration..." Does this usually take long? I'm thinking of forcing shutdown on it.

Hope you have anything important backed up?

Looks like you may be looking at a new install.

On the repair, are you choosing the first R option, or going to the next one where you are asked to repair the actual version of windows and are shown the directory it is installed in?

I chose the the directory first then r. the "actual" repair install. And I don't have data backed up so that's why i was scared earlier.

Now its stuck on "Restarting computer..." Guess it's just taking long. Strange for a 4 gig P4 system.

Update: Still stuck. Is it safe to force a shutdown?

I'd let it sit awhile longer.
