Dell Mobo question.
Hi, I am interested in moving my premade dell mobo to a new case with a new psu/gpu/hdd etc. I tried talking to a dell rep about it and he just kept saying things like "I don't reccomend it" and "It will void your warranty." However, I need to do this until I can procure the funds for a new mobo/cpu later on. Hoping someone here can tell me if I am able to move this mobo to a new case or not. It is a full size tower. The mobo model number is: dell inc. 0R849J Thanks.

If its a somewhat recent computer (last few years) i don't see any reason why you could not move all parts into a new case? I think many years ago dell used to weld or do something to permanently fix their motherboards to the case so you could not remove them but that was a very long time ago.

other then maybe voiding the warranty i don't see a reason why you can't. Just make sure you know what your doing and while you have everything outside of the computer you might as well give all the parts a good cleaning.

The pc is from feb 2009, yes. So it is not too old, I just was worried about if I would be able to screw it properly onto my HAF 932 case.

you should be able to move it into another case. but worst case if it does not fit or the screw holes dont line up you can always put it back into the dell case if you had to.

Alright. I just looked at my case and it supports M-ATX so I'm hoping that is the case.

Does your existing Dell chassis have a removable I/O shield or is it part of the chassis? Is the front panel header a 2x5standard 10 pin header with pin #10 missing or is it a 2x8 or 2x10 header?

On some Dell's the I/O shield was removable and if yours is removable it can be installed in another chassis? If the front panel motherboard header is a standard 2x5 header with pin #10 missing you shouldn't have to do much on the front panel re-wiring.

You may have a problem with motherboard stand-offs (risers) and alignment of the I/O ports and I/O shield since on many machine Dell doesn't use stand-offs they use raised areas as standoffs on the bottom of the chassis.

In most cases transferring a proprietary motherboard to another chassis will present some problems. Some are easy to correct and some are not so easy to correct. Whether you should attempt the change or not is dependent on your skills and the tools you have available for use.

From the pics you posted I can't tell anything. I did look then board up online, but the pic wasn't very good but it did appear to have a 2x5 front panel header.

You need to take a CLEAR pic of the I/O shield around the I/O connectors on the back of the chassis. Also a CLEAR pic of the front panel header would help verify that it is a 2x5 header.

I did see in the pics you posted Dell is using a booster fan inline with the processor cooler fan to adequately cool the processor. You need to take the exaust fan location into consideration when choosing a chassis.
