monitor screen

Computer sleeping, I hit the space bar. Screen comes up but there is about one and a half inches to the right of the screen that duplicates the left side and one and a half inches at the bottom (below task bar) that duplpicates the top part of the screen.
Being a beginner, I have no idea where to start. This just happened in the last hour.

The monitor is a ViewSonic 17" that came with my Dell inspiron 531 desktop.
