Click this link the pick your brand in the new window click on scan my system.
Adding ram is usually easy with a small cover being removed..in some rare cases..its not that straightforward..I will see what I can find on your unit to see if removing it is a simple cover or not

Your in luck..it uses a simple cover

http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals...Apache_RPL.pdf

Get a towel
close the unit
place it upside down on the towel
remove cover
GROUND YOURSELF before sticking your hand in the unit.
Remove ram if needed
open new ram packaageing...only touch the edges of the ram so as to not to touch any circuitry.
GROUND YOURSELF
Install ram
replace cover/

Boot machine.......if machine hangs..you may have to go into the bios to disable quickboot.........it does happen once in a while.

After booting....turn off machine go back into bios and re enable quick boot

The difference is too far. Which store is selling in such a difference?
Any as to what you said. the memory slot is only one, I found this on the same memeorygiant website.

For the DELL Dimension 8100 desktop PC, check here

The unit has 2 slots...it ships with one slot filled with a 512 stick.
You need to remove the 512 stick and install 2 1 gig sticks.
You will be very happy with the upgrade...as vista barely runs with 512,but runs rather well on 2 gigs.

No you wont lose anything...also I forgot to mention be sure the unit is off {not asleep or hibernated} and the battery is removed.

as far as the desktop...dell makes more than one 8100 which series is it?
The ram for it shouldnt be very high unless is rather old or the very latest technology

If your machine is the Dimension 8100 it uses RDRAM aka "Rambus". "Rambus" memory has always been and will always be much more expensive than other memory. Today, there are very few manufacturers who still produce RDRAM memory.

Does this have xp on it?..How much ram right now?
If you have 512 of ram in it..you will see very little improvement by adding more..unless you run some major games or some some other software which hit the ram pretty good..some photo editing software for example.
Since the ram is so expensive for the desktop it is something to consider

If you go to www.crucial.com, they can scan your computer and tell you what memory you have and what you can add.
Also if you go to the Gateway web site you should be able to access the manual for your computer, and it should have directions for you as to how to replace the ram.
