Realtek Audio Problems
I have integrated audio on my HP Pavilion a1023c computer (Realtek ALC 880 chipset) which appears to be working correctly. All drivers have been updated - when I click on Device Manager I see that the device, Realtek High Definition Audio, is working correctly, etc. yet I have no sound. I have uninstalled it and let the system re-install it - still nothing. I have checked the bios and everything there appears normal - the audio is set to auto. The operating system is Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3. When I insert a music CD it appears to be playing - yet there is no sound. I am now stumped - does anyone have any ideas on how to regain the sound ???

Have you made sure that the sound is not muted? Open the little Speaker icon on the lower right (Systray) of the screen and check.

Go into Realtek HD Audio Manager in the Control Panel and make sure the volume slider is set high enough. Also check the other settings.

By the way, the current driver version for Windows XP is 5.10.0.6194 and was released today.

To answer both of your questions - to dustyjay, no the speaker was not muted and to flavallee, I installed the current drivers as you mentioned and while the Device Manager says it is working correctly and has all the current drivers - now in the Control Panel under Sounds and Audio Devices - everything is grayed out and it states there is no playback, recorder or midi device installed. I then went to Add Hardware to be sure it was installed and it states that it is and has the current drivers. Now I have less than I had before??? Now what ??

The Realtek High Definition Audio driver has to be run twice in Windows Vista and the computer restarted after each run.

The first run uninstalls the old driver.

The second run installs the new driver.

I'm not sure if that has to be done in Windows XP too.

It appears I have finally solved the "no sound" problem. I uninstalled MS Service Pack 3 and the spearkers immediately started working..... I am in the process of updating the drivers, etc. and will again try to download Service Pack 3 - if the same thing happens - Service Pack 3 will have to be history.... That is very unfortunate as I do want to keep my computer fully updated but not without sound !!!

There was a problem with Realtek sound in some computers after the SP3 upgrade was released. There was a fix released for it, but I don't remember what it was.

I wouldn't want to do without future security-related updates and fixes, so you might want to consider replacing the on-board Realtek sound with a sound card.

I haven't either. The SP3 upgrade affected some computers with Realtek sound, and not all of them.

After new install with sp3 RT Audio fails
This works for mine problem after new installation with SP3

This patch is required before any of the HD device drivers are installed
1. On your PC change the CSDVersion registry key to XP SP2:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion value=200
2. Restart your PC
3. Install KB888111xpsp2.exe HD_Audio/kb888111xpsp2.exe
4. Change the CSDVersion key back to XP SP3 again:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion value=300
5. Restart your PC, finalize configuration of your PC, sysprep and capture.
