Question Ram Installation
I have a Compaq Presario v5101us Windows xp
I was told I should have more ram. I have 384.
I have ordered 1GB PC-2700-SO DIMM

I want to make sure I install it right when I receive it.
I have found the 2 modules on my computer. They are more or less on top of one another.

QUESTIONS;

Do I remove both of them or just one.
Which slot do I put the new module in? The top or bottom.

I know about grounding and static elect.

Since I am an amateur, give step by step instructions.

Thankyou very much. Retired in Nebraska

Since you have two modules and a total of 384MB that means you have one 256MB and one 128MB. I would take out the smaller one and replace it with the new one.

Here's an overview: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...roduct=1841905

Here are detailed instructions: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...roduct=1841905

Hi Chasf,

I agree with stantley. Keep the 256MB in and remove the 128MB. In its place, put in the 1GB.
Doesn't matter which slot. You can install modules one at a time and you can mix different densities of modules in this model computer. And no, it won't blow up.

You will soon find that installing memory is one of the quickest and easiest things to do.
stantley provided excellent links with instructions on how to do this.

This computer had 512ram when new. One guy in Virtual Dr. someone has gone into Bios and changed amount of ram for better video. Wasn't me. I don't fiddle around in there. Must have been repair girl.

One more question. Since I have 2 modules, how do I tell which one has the most ram on it?
Trial and error???since it won't blow up. Thankyou gentlemen.

The 128MB was allocated to your onboard video adapter then. 512-128 = 384

If there are 2 modules in there, they must both be 256MB. The amount is usually indicated on the actual module.

chasf:

The Compaq Presario V5101US laptop does use DDR PC2700 SODIMM modules and supports up to 2048 MB(2 GB) of RAM, so it will accept a 1024 MB(1 GB) module in each slot.

Here is a blowup image from the MEMORYTEN site of what that module looks like. As you can see, it has an informational label on it.

If you look at the label on the modules in your laptop, it'll likely have "256 MB" on the label - if they are 256 MB modules.

Here is the support site for that laptop. I highly recommend that you add and save this site to your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it when needed.

Here is the section with instructions and images for removing and installing RAM modules. Scroll down to Determining how much RAM memory is installed in your computer while the computer is turned off and then start reading from there.

Hey Chasf,

How did this end up going for you? Were you able to get the RAM and install it?
