Installing Wireless Chip
I am having trouble installing a new wireless chip (HP Broadcom 54g MaxPerformance 802.11g).

My computer is an HP Pavilion dv1000.

When I went to install it this error appeared on the screen: 104 - Unsupported wireless network device detected. System halted. Remove device and restart.

The system works on the hardline. Any suggestions?

Are you trying to install a wireless adapter card in the computer that H-P has specifically listed as being supported by that particular model computer?

Presuming this is a laptop and the wireless card is a PCMCIA bus card. Try installing drivers from the cards install disk without the card in place. Shut down, install card, reboot and see if it's detected on startup (I'm assuming you have the disk for the card - if not download drivers from web).

Wireless std / download
The wireless card I have was indicated in a wireless book I have for the computer (802.11g).

I downloaded the driver from the net, installed the wireless card but still got the same error.

Apparently you are not the only one that has had this problem with this particular internal PCI card for laptops. After perusing around I found the following links (which you've probably already found), but post them in the event it may help. The last link is to the HP site and there are several pages of links regarding this card and/or variations for different OS's and versions of the card.

Good luck. Hope you get it to operate.

Drivers
Worked with these links a bit. I think I have the right driver, still getting the original error.

did u download the original updated driver for your os from the manufacturer's website
sometimes you get old versions on the web.
if you have a windows 7, did you check HW compatibility and if the driver supported are 64 or 32 bit, and matches your windows?

Working with windows XP
Still not working.

It might help to know - when I boot up, the computer starts to go to windows briefly and then reverts to a black screen with the error code listed in the initial post.

I just went through this whole song and dance with an HP.
One suggestion was a BIOS update/Softpaq, which wasn't available for this nx6110.
Another was to remove the adapter, install updated drivers and replace it. Didn't help at all.
I ended up removing the device altogether and using a PCMCIA adapter, and now it's working fine.
I found this to be a very frustrating problem and an indictment of HP's hardware.

Adapter
Thanks, I did a search on it. It may be a solution down the road - still looking to get this chip recognized.

Chip recognition
Is there a way to get this chip recognized? It is a drop in chip into the computer.
