Laptop freezes with weird sound
Since i got my DELL laptop it often freezes with a weird sound, the only way to stop it is by pressing the power button for 5 seconds..
Searching the internet i found quiet a lot people with the same problem.
I also found a few answers about the possible solution, but it all involved messing with the bios, which I'm not conformable at all with.

Could anyone help me with this matter?

What's the 7-character service tag number on the sticker on the case?

Can you be more specific about "a weird sound"?

As for the weird sound, i can't really describe it, all i can say it comes from the speakers.
It's NOT a failing hardware sound.

The freezes occur at random, sometimes 5 minutes after boot-up, but sometimes i can leave my computer on for a few days without any crashes...

According to that service tag number, your computer is a Dell Studio 1745 laptop.

Here is the support site that's specific only to your laptop. You should add and save it to your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

Let's see what's auto-loading and running in the background and if any obvious problems need to be addressed.

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

Download and save the free version of

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1.1100

SUPERAntiSpyware 4.50.0.1002

then close all open windows first, then install them, then restart the computer.

Once that's done, follow these instructions carefully and completely:

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Click "Updates(tab) - Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "OK".

Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan".

If infections are found during the scan, the number of infections will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click "Show Results".

Make sure that everything is selected, then click "Remove Selected".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.

Click "Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

Start SUPERAntiSpyware.

Click "Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "Close".

Click "Scan your Computer - Perform Quick Scan - Next".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear.

When the scan is finished and the scan summary window appears, click "OK".

Make sure that everything in the list is selected, then click "Next".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

Start SUPERAntiSpyware again.

Click "Preferences - Statistics/Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "View Log".

Next, click Start - Run, type in %temp% and then click OK.

When the C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Temp folder appears, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside it.

It's all junk and is a good place for "nasties" to hide.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

After you're done, restart the computer.

Even tough i appreciate your efforts, this wasn't the kind of help i was looking for.
I know for fact this is a hardware issue (from past experiences and a lot of googling)
I had this problem since i bought this computer and it is not software related. (otherwise i would have fixed it a long time ago)
I re-installed win7 twice after reformatting, the problem stayed, and i also used to use linux (no emulation) on this computer when i also experienced the same problem.

From what i could read on the net, this seems to be either a memory or video card related problem.
(this is why i posted in the hardware forum)
But i have no idea on either how to diagnose the exact problem, neither how to solve it. And as i don't want to mess everything up, on this computer (as i badly need it to work for study related apps), i turned over to here.
I heard some people talking about a tool called "cpu-z", but i have no idea how to interpret it's data...

Flavallee, is there any way we could chat perhaps?

Well, here i got the problem again!!
But for the first time windows was able to give me a "report" of the error.
Previously i always had an "unknown error" reported at the next start up.

Since you already know it's hardware-related and has continued to be a problem even after formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows 7 twice, there's not anything I can do about it. I was focusing on it being a software or infection problem.

Thanks for your time flavallee, do you know if anyone here could be able to help me?

From what i could make out, it might be a memory frequency/timings/voltage issue where I'm supposed to mess with the "AUTO" BIOS settings to make my configuration "stable". But i have no idea how to do this safely.

It also might be another hardware "failure", but nothing i could find any information about.

Any help is appreciated

There are a number of hardware experts that frequent and assist in this section, so cross your fingers and wait to see if one of them replies to you.

If you've been messing with the BIOS settings, you might consider resetting them to their default settings.
