Question {SOLVED} McAfee Virus Scan
I was running version 4.03. I decided to take advantage of my free upgrade and downloaded it through Secure Cast. As i started the install, I noticed it was version 4.0.1. Thinking it was an older version than the one I was using I cancelled the install. Well it had already removed the previous version, leaving only the preserved settings as I requested. I had no choice but to install the upgrade. When Scan central told me I was using 4023 dat files and should be using 4061 dats, I installed 4061. I e-mailed Mc Afee through their express e-mail tech support. I was told I would get a response in 10 minutes. That was 10 hours ago. My questions to them, and now to you are as follows. How do you tell which is the latest version? Did I end up with an older version than what I had? It tells me I am now using 4.00.950. By installing 4061 dat, and none between 4023 and 4061, am I protected against the viruses that the others were written for? I have wondered in the past if when new dats are installed if they have previous files in them and overwrite, or is each one completely different? If so anyone who does not have every dat file made is not fully protected. Also I will need another hard drive to hold all of this information, because it gets quite sizable. I think others would also be interested in how this works. You have been very helpful to me in the past and I hope you can help me with this. Thank You

dsmon,
When updating dat files it overwrites any previous versions. Go to Find>Files and Folders>type in: McAfee, to see what Version is listed. Version 4.0.3 is the current. Also right click on Vshield>choose About. This should give the version of McAfee. Seems there might be a bug in Dat 4061, Kodaik and myself are getting "Invalid VxD in McScan32vxd errors". He posted in 9X forum with problem.
GOOD LUCK

You don't have to download through that Secure Cast thing. Go to their webpage and download the updates there.
http://www.mcafee.com Go to download section. There they will have Dats and SuperDats. The SuperDats not only update your viruses, but also the engine. Get the latest SuperDat and from then on out just get the Dats until you see that they have posted an updated SuperDat.

This way is free forever, unlike the other process.

Well, I believed by now you should have some idea of your anti virus program, just a short note if you experiance problem downloading it from www.mcafee.com another alternative would be www.nai.com

Both will have the latest update on every Wednesday of the week.

Thank you. All 3 of you. Toneys I checked Virus Sheild as you suggested and it says Version 4.0.3. scan engine 4.0.50. Right clicking the files in "find" show version 4.0.3. However in scan central the version reads 4.00.950. And today I decided to try out my emergency start up disk, ( I had never tried one before) and it told me the following: 4.0.2 licensed 11/25/98, virus dat files 4016, created 2/25/99, checks for 20951 viruses etc.,It is more than 10 months old, suggest I upgrade copy for best protection. I made this startup disk from this "latest" upgrade from Mc Afee. Why am I getting 3 different version #s in different parts of this program? Am I as up to date as I can be at the present time with what I have done? I know I can download the updates and super dats, directly without using secure cast. Do you reccomend I by pass secure Cast? Do I do a super dat each time it is posted? Why is this emergency disk so out of date? I know I ask a lot of ??, but I am eager to learn about this, and Mc Afee sure doesn't supply any answers. Thanks Jean

dsmom,
To verify which version is being used by your registry do this. DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES IN THE REGISTRY JUST LOOK. Go to Start|Run|type in dialog box regedit|hit OK. This will open the Registry Editor. In the left pane window left click on + at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, left click + at Software. Scroll down list to McAfee and left click +, then click on Scan95. In the right pane window you should see a list of values for McAfee, look for Current Version and Dat File. Close out Reg. Editor by clicking on X. You can also uninstall Virus Scan and reinstall, then update the scan engine and dats. Stay away from Dat 4060 and 4061 for now. Look in Windows Explorer for McAfee Folder. You should have the 4.03 Version there you downloaded so you can reinstall. If that dosen't work call McAfee and don't give up till they help you. If you say on line after phone prompt's someone will answer line, just not toll free. Another thing you can try is going to www.mcafee.com and under support they have a message board for getting problems answered. Hope this Helps You.
