Ok, I have a Agere Systems AC'97 (v.92) modem which I'm pretty/completely sure is a winmodem! (how unlucky am I ) It's in my IBM A31 2652 C3U laptop and does not work in linux! I've looked at linmodems.org and such but ( ) cannot seem to figure it out! If any of you extremely kind, nice, handsome, helpful ppl could help me, I would most certainly appreciate it .

P.S. I'm running red hat 8.0 dual boot with *shudder* XP *shudder*. It's a laptop i got through school so opening it up to find the chipset isn't an option. Don't know if this helps

I can't really help cos I spent a weekend trying to connect my linmodem to no avail - finally borrowed an external modem from the office to dial in, now I can dial in but can't browse the net

- what you should do is browse the page - there is a utility you can download and use in windows that helps identify the chipset for your lap top.

Anyways - just wanted to say before you do anything make sure you have
your ISP information including
Domain
nameserver
proxy (if any)

Let me know how it goes. I hope you can set it up - I know the feeling of not being connected to the internet.

I know how you feel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a Toshiba laptop with a Winmodem. I gave up in the end and installed an external serial modem, which works really well. I tried out a USB modem which didnt work either so i would stick with serial. a couple programs which i tried out which come with linux worked for me when i set up my modem. they are setserial for setting up the serial ports. minicom -s which you have to use in root and also wvdialconfig. All these you type into the terminal. HOWEVER, i would strongly recomend that you look these programs up in the help files or if you can access the internet by any other means that you check out the HOW TOO's on each program. Sorry there are too many details to go through and type out.
