Question Installing ping on linux server
My webhost does not allow the systemwide usage of the system installed ping or traceroute commands but have said that I could install such commands for myself. My question is, how do I find these commands for download and how to install it only for myself. All of my linux experience has been only as a system admin and I never learned how to enable or install user specific commands.

You probably already have ping installed-in fact Im sure you do if your on the 'net with Linux because its part of the tcp/ip suite-
your webhost just doesnt allow anyone to ping them because its a lame but popular way to launch DoS attacks. Most ISPs wont let you ping them, but you can still use the ping command on other hosts
I guess thats what you mean?Do a whereis at the command prompt. It should return the path its in.

Not quite. I think you misunderstood. I have a webhost that does not allow it's clients/subscribers/customers user ping and traceroute from their server. I have ssh access to the webhost. When I am logged in, I am unable to ping or traceroute to other hostson the internet. I get a permission denied error. I can only assume it is because I do not have root access. They have told me I can install any program that duplicates the functionality of either of those programs for my own use. What I want to know is if this is even possible with ping or traceroute. Can they be installed and run by a user without root permissions? Are there any alternative programs that a non-root user can install and run?

Sorry CyberT,I did misunderstand
I would ask the ISP if they know of any alternatives. Most of the so-called "Visual" or "Graphical" ping or traceroute utilities are just frontends that use your default tcp/ip utilities.
I did a search for alternatives but could only find the above.I even tried a search for non-ICMP alternatives but didnt get(or expect)any results.
Seems like this ISP wants no one being able to send ICMP packets except themselves.
