What's the file ext.? If it's a tar.gz or a .tgz, do this:
Open a terminal and type:
cd directory (this is usually /home/username)
tar xzvf filename.tar.gz

you don't unzip a .bin, it is a binary file and can be executed.

Try checking the permissions on the file with ls -l filename.bin. You should see something like:

rwx-rw-rw. If you see (instead) rw-rw-rw or something similar (i.e., no 'x' in the permissions) then try (as root) chmod 755 filename.bin and then try executing it.

Hope this helps.

I assumed he had a .bin that had been gzipped.Looks like codejockey,deuce868 and Gibble has it covered
