Mandrake Linux 9.0 - Mouse Doesnt work. HELP!!!
Here's the deal.

I just purchased a P3 powered machine, custom built.

It is currently set up with a dual boot option.

Default boots into Windows XP Pro.

Second Option will boot into Mandrake Linux 9.0

Everything on the machine works quite well, save for one issue: Linux does not recogize the mouse at all.

I am using a Microsoft Intellimouse with a USB connection directly to the machine. When in the Windows boot- The mouse works fine. When I boot into Linux- I cant get the mouse to respond.

I have tried swapping the mouse for a PS/2 model- no luck there.

I have also tried an old serial port mouse- still no luck.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get my mouse to work in Linux?

I should mention, I am relatively new to the Linux OS, so please be detailed.

Thanks for the help!

The first thing I'd try is to contact the vendor, since they configured the system. Presumably, they checked it out before selling it to you, but they may not have checked the Linux side. Nonetheless, they may know immediately what the problem is likely to be. Linux X-windows normally supports the MS-IntelliMouse (although I'm not sure whether the USB interface may cause trouble). It is certainly possible that your Linux kernel does not have USB support compiled in. Note that you must also define your mouse to X-windows, so swapping your USB mouse for a PS2 or serial mouse would have no effect if X-windows were still expecting a USB mouse. You can certainly try reconfiguring X-windows to use a PS2 or serial mouse and see if that makes any difference.

Hope this helps.

To make this rat to work just edit your /etc/module file and simply add "hid" in it and you're done! (remember not to put the "").
Just one thing ... it works better in linux than in windows! LOL

I had this same problem, Turns out lindows worked better for me, as my tvtuner didn't like mandrake for some reason. Also lindows is just a modified Suse system, you can update lindows to the newest suse useing Apt-get.

Just to prove I had the same problem, The mouse works without this line. But all you can do is go up and down.

Eh!? SuSE is an RPM-based system: Apt-get is for Debian-based systems.
Oh sure, you can make Apt-get work for SuSE but why bother.Just use Debian.
