I thought I saw VNC with Red Hat 8.0 with GNOME package.

TightVNC is supposed to be pretty good.

VNC includes a java server, that should platform independent.

VNC is available in source form; if you have a compiler, you likely can make it work on your system. That said, I believe VNC works on RedHat (and other Linuxes) without modification.
