Mandrake driver installation.
I just installed Mandrake. I downloaded a driver for my modem and it is on a floppy.I don't know the file system jargon or commands. I tried to use the copy/paste,but it says "access denied". How do I install it? Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem. Mandrake 8.1.

If you were not root when you tried to access the floppy, you may have had problems. Try doing the copy/paste as root (which should take care of any permissions issues). As for the incantation to install the driver, it varies, depending on how the driver is packaged. What is the name of the driver file (including all extensions)?

Any info appreciated.

I logged in as root, but am having trouble navigating, plus it seems i've got some damaged files. How do I scan the disk? The name of the file is:"speedmgmt.tar.gz". If I could get online while running Linux,I could find out more about using it,lol.

I went to: /dev/floppy ,but instead of showing the file it shows about 10 zero kb files. Is that the right path?

Well, I've copied the whole compressed file in the appropriate directory and uncompressed it. I am now having trouble configuring it. I use the wizard ,but it doesn't work when I'm done, lol. It recognizes my modem. I tell it this is a ADSL,but maybe it IDSN? (It's on IDSN channel in Windows). I will try that next. May be the wrong driver, too, who knows?lol
