how to delete a Red Hat start menu entry
I'm a Linux Newbie who has just installed Red Hat 8. I have it up and running and am connected to the internet.

I recently ran into several web sites that said I needed Shockwave-flash to operate properly. So I went to the web site and down loaded the Linux version of Flash. It installed properly and I can now view the web sites that previously gave me a problem.

Now for the stupid question...when I now click on the Red Hat start menu I have an entry of the name of the Flash plug-in I downloaded and installed. I can't right or left click to get rid of it. I looked (Google) all over the internet for an answer on how to delete this entry. I;m sure there is an easy answer but I can't find it!

Please help. Thanks! -Gene-

I suspect you will need to know what desktop environment you are running (gnome and KDE are probably the most prevalent) and consult the documentation for that desktop environment. In KDE, for example, a right-click brings up a menu that includes a "panel" option; following this allows you to remove applets, buttons, etc.

Hope this helps -- and any info appreciated.

CODEJOCKEY...thanks for your answer.

I am using KDE. I right-clicked on the desk top...everything in that menu seems to deal with panel on the bottom of the screen.

I read in the KDE manual about an app called 'kappfinder' which talks about adding entries to the Kmenu. Nothing about deleting them.

It said to press 'ALT-F2' and type in 'kappfinder'. I did this. Came back and said it couldn't 'kappfinder'.

It looks like 'kappfinder' might be the answer but can't get it launched!

I tried to drag and drop the Kmenu entry in the trash can. Didn't work.

Bad start to the morning!

Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks for your help. -Gene-

In KDE, if you right-click on one of the panel application buttons or blank space within the panel, it brings up a menu. Select remove to remove the button you clicked on. Select panel->remove->button to select a different button to remove (buttons launch the associated application, so by removing the button, you are removing the application from the panel). You can also remove applets and so-called "special buttons" this way, too. These functions are also available from start application (the big K) -> configure panel. Is this what you had in mind?

Hope this helps.

Thanks CODEJOCKEY for your help.

I am not making myself clear...sorry, it's my fault.

The entry I was trying to get rid of was in the KMenu...on the left side of the screen...not the panel running across the bottom of the screen.

After having said all that, when I turned the computer on this afternoon the entry was gone from the KMenu. Now I am really confused.

I don't know what happened to it, so I guess 'alls well that ends well'.

Thanks for your help!

Open a terminal and type:
kmenuedit
It a gui program but to get it to work the 1st time you have to call it from a terminal. After doing this,it should be available from KMenu>system>tools>menu editor.
It's a fairly easy interface to understand.

LYNCH...thanks for your answer.

KMENUEDIT is exactly what I was looking for!

One more question (there's always one more question ). Could you recommend a Linux book for a newbie like me that would answer a lot of basic Linux questions?

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

I think that, even though it's a test prep guide,The Linux+ Bible is a very good book about the basics. There are others, one that sticks in my mind is Peter Norton's Complete Guide to Linux(go figure )
A good free book you can download in pdf or html is Rute .You need to use Mozilla as the html is gzipped on the site.
