linux 8.2 partition resizing/win98 reload
I have a laptop with 6gb, installed with mandrake linux 8.2 and windows 98se. Now my laptop somehow always switch off by itself when i dual boot to windows98. Is there anyway i can resize the current linux partition so that i can safely transfer all my files in win98 partition safely to the linux partition? (i have run out of linux space, so need to convert win98 space to linux).

Alternatively, how can i reinstall my win98 software without affecting my linux partition/setup and bootup. I am afraid that after the win98 installation, it might bootup straight to win98 and have to reinstall linux again.

Thanks.

Hey tanchu ,

you can use a utility called partion magic to resize your partion. As far as reinstalling win 98, I don't think its going to work. I think 98 must be install 1st on a drive.

you mean to say that i need to get partition magic to do this? Is it the windows version or is there a linux version? Can i just used diskdrake to do that?

I was thinking that can i create a new partition using the leftover space in win98. Then i transferred all my important data to the new partition. After that i erase the win98 partition and transferred all the space to linux. Is it feasible?

I think Partion magic works with both linux and window.
I've never heard of "diskdrake".

And i'm don't think linux let u resize the partion, although I could be wrong.

Mandrake linux 8.2 allow u to go into control centre to mount/unmount, resize partition. I have managed to create 1 new partition from the existing win98. What i am doing is :

1) to create a new space from the existing win98 part,
2) relocate the new space to existing linux part,
3) copy data from win98 to linux part,
4) redo the steps 1 to 3 again.

But somehow, the system does not allow me to relocate space from win98 after creating a new partition. And also i have problems relocating the extra space to linux partition.

Any idea to overcome that?

And also can i install office 97/2000 in the wine environment and what is the procedure?

Thanks.

Creae a fat32 partition for the win98 stuff. You then need to edit the /etc/fstab to be able to mount it in Linux.
OpenOffice.org and AbiWord can work with word documents.Wine isnt worth the trouble to set it up.
