Exclamation sorry-kwrite
i was trying to install LILO, http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/fhassel_grub_lilo.html. it told me to go to run command and type: /etc/sysconfig/bootloader and change the "LOADER_TYPE" from grub to LOADER_TYPE="lilo" i did that but i can't save it. it said, "The file could not be saved. Please check if you have write permission." what i can do to fix this prob.? i'm a root user.

How did you become root?
Did you login as root at the GUI login screen or did you open a terminal and su to root?If the latter, you had 2 processes going, one as user(kwrite) and one as root(terminal).Doing this wont give you root over the desktop apps. For that, login as root from the GUI login screen.
To do it from a terminal, try this:
su <enter>
type root password <enter>
Now you can run vi.Type:
vi /etc/sysconfig/bootloader to open the file
Type i to switch to insert mode to edit text
use the arrow keys to move up and down or across
put cursor at the 1st letter in grub and hit delete until it's gone
type in lilo
After that you need to hit the "esc" key to switch to command mode
Then type "ZZ"or":wq" to save and quit(without the quotes )
I always edit my files with kwrite from the root desktop by logging in as root at the GUI login screen. Then I just open the file in kwrite.

Try logging on as root from the GUI login screen when you start SuSE.You'll see a red desktop with bombs and a message telling you its not safe..blah blah.Just open the file from kwrite and make those changes and save.
I followed my own instructions before I posted them so I'm sure they are right. After entering vi,did you press i to get to insert(edit) mode?
Look over the instructions again

Im sorry:I dont have a screen name as I dont use IRC or AIM or anything like that.
These public forums are the only means I use for interaction with others.I had to hide my email addy and turn off PM because I was getting flooded with questions by people who wouldnt even bother to join TSG before trying to contact me.I actually had to post a message similiar to this in my signature until recently.
Any way,try the vi method again and check your syntax or go the lazy(my ) route and edit from the root desktop.

lynch i edited the thing successfully and then i went to bootloader configuration blah blah and then i configure where i should install lilo but then i doubt where i should install it. anyhow, i rebooted and lilo was loading but i didn't boot successfully. it goes like this:

LILO Boot Menu
/dev/hda6

Hit any key to cancel timeout 00:20 (i set i to 20 sec)
Use <- up down -> arrow keys to make selection .
enter choice & options, hit CR to boot.

Boot:

when i clix entered it was loading but nothing happened.

so den i reinstalled suse again and somehow deactivate lilo. and reboot it again and the screen filled with: l99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999
999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999
999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 and more 9's. so i put my suse cd 1 in and do the installation again and confugured the boot configurator and i didn't have a clue and i set linux as default and leave safe setting as it is. boom........and then i saw a list linux and safe setting (windows 1, 2, 3 , floppy were gone) so i clix on linux....and it starts to boot..........then it just paused and said: kernel panic: ufs: unable to mount root fs on 3:06. so i thought i just screwed up my comp cuz i can't boot into linux and can't find windows 1 to boot into xp. so the only way is just to do the installation again (new complete installation) so here i am back all way from last week. geez lynch.....prob comes after prob. i could get this thing to work and the next thing won't. man i love suse. (being sarcastic) o yea....lynch if i set linux as a default how can i boot into xp are there any commands for it.

if i don't want to have anything to do with suse anymore can i delete suse partitions. and if i did would i see:
linux
windows 1
windows 2
windows 3
floppy
safe setting
when i boot?

i could delete them with partition magic 8.0

my current hard drive:

device size type
/dev/hda 55.9gb ST360020A
/dev/hda 1 28.9gb hpfs/ntfs
/dev/hda 2 9.8gb hpfs/ntfs
/dev/hda 3 5.5gb hpfs/ntfs
/dev/hda 4 11.7 extended
/dev/hda 5 945.0 mb linux swap
/dev/hda 6 10.8 gb linux native /

where should lilo be installed to?

and what about "path to linux kernel"

and when suse load, it said:

Mount: fs type ntfs not supported by kernel failed.

*sorry lynch i might be confusing u cuz im very inarticulate (like prez bush...hehe) bout these kinds of stuff. i hope u be able to piece this puzzle out. and yea........thanks for these last few days. ure the only one who cares bout my dilemma while everyone else laughed at it.

thanks again

Where do I begin?
First off, congrats for figuring out the editing thing!
You want to install Lilo to the MBR(master boot record)
If you want to try again, here we go :
Go here and get the win98se oem bootdisk.Set it aside for now.
Run PM and delete your Linux partitions.Leave resulting space as free and unallocated.
Set your comp to boot from floppy and boot from the win98se bootdisk.
At the A: prompt type:
fdisk/mbr hit enter
That will restore the MBR to it's previous state before installing SuSE.
Remove floppy and reboot to XP.Should be able to now.
If you can run XP now, then so far so good.
If you want to try SuSE one more time
Reset to boot from cd drive and start install.Dont do the safe settings install (I think it leaves out the ntfs modules.)Make sure that Lilo gets installed to the MBR.
If not, running fdisk/mbr should have you back to where you were.

In ezcdcreator,I believe if you open a new session or project or whatever they call it,and open the File menu, there should be an option for Create CD from Image.Choose that and a dialog box opens asking where the image file is.Type in the path or just browse to the image and click OK.That's how I (vaguely ) remember how that works.
In Nero there should be an option in the Data CD wizard to burn a CD from an iso image.
As brendandonhu says, the forum rules here prohibit discussion of illegal stuff, like downloading warez .I dont think Lindows has a free version.
Try burning and installing Mandrake as it's your best bet.

The demo version of Lindows is 100 bucks!

In Nero, you would go to the Wizard, choose Bootable CD, go through those options (if you dont know what they are, defaults are OK). Choose the ISO, hit Burn.

It's a pretty good guess that Mandrake will pull out of thier problems and continue as before. They'll be releasing 9.1 soon.
It's really up to you-if you want it to be easy for you on your 1st try at linux go with Mandrake. They make things easier for 1st-timers(I hate the word Newbie) Redhat is a little harder at first but after using both for a while you would see that most of the differences are small. You've only invested your time so far
Good luck
