can someone tell me how to chmod?
im trying to install a forum for my site but i have no clue how to chmod. they keep telling me to chmod useing my ftp client, i use winscp and dont see anything that says chmod. chmod isnt as simple as changing the folder name is it? basicaly im clueless about the chmod thing. somehow im missing the concept here. anyone have any helpfull information for someone who doesnt have a clue about what he need to do to chmod something? i need some help. thanks.

You should login as root.
The syntax for the chmod command can be done a couple different ways:
chmod xxx filename where x is the numerical indicator for permissions.
1=x or execute permission
2=r or read permission
4=w or write permission
The order they are put is important too: user- group- others
If you want a file to be readable by everyone you can do this:
chmod a+r filename
Here's a good explanation for it.

As lynch mentions, chmod basically refers to changing permissions on a file or folder.
A good demonstration of how to do this with an ftp client is HERE.

WinSCP looks like it should be similar.
