When do I dl Knoppix?
I decided I want to download Linux. I've got 40GBs, 37 of which are used. Im getting ready to install another 80GBs.

Do I install my 80GBs and then get Linux, or should I go ahead and download Linux on my first forty? It would seem reasonable to install the 80, partition it into 2 forties (or 1 forty and 2 twenties?) and then get Linux. But with more information, what seems reasonable now, might not seem reasonable then. That's why Im asking, trying to avoid landmines and pitfalls as I grope towards what seems like a light but what may well be only a reflection of a reflection of the light.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

You need to download the Knoppix iso and burn it to a CD.Then you use the CD and run Knoppix from the CD drive and ram.Unless you plan to install it permanently(it's possible because I did last week )you dont need to do anything except what I have mentioned.
I followed these instructions:

Thank you, lynch! Yes, I was intending to put it on my HD; but maybe keeping it on the CD for awhile . . . but I don't like the intentions of BIlll Gates, you know. MS is obviously making very bad moves, or moves that are consumer hostile, so no matter, Im headed for Knoppix.

Would it be better to keep the windows 98 on the 40GB and the Knoppix on the other, or doesn't it make a bit of difference?

Thanks for the info. All of it.

Depends:If,as you say, your 40GB drive has 37 GB used, then you might want to put it on the new drive.I'd just try it out from the CD and check it out before you tackle installing it to a hard drive. This way you dont fubar your system and you still get to try out a new OS.
As far as where to put it when your ready to install it,Linux doesnt really care where you put it.
Knoppix is great:it's the first Debian based distribution I've tried so far.I've been using Mandrake and SuSE for years, but there RPM based. But besides that, they're pretty similiar.
Good luck.
