As root you can edit /etc/x11/XF86Config to change the refresh rate, but you need to figure out the use of at least one text editor.
I'm starting to think you may have had a bad install or somthing. After typing in your root password the MCC should open with a list of options on the left and depending on the option you choose, there should be another set of options on the right. If your whole screen went black with just a cursor what did you do then?

I played around and typed, lol. but nothing happened,no "bad command" errors or anything, so I pushed the eject(power) button.

I think this thing is screwed ,too. I bought this at the store about 2 years ago.Maybe I should download the latest version and install it.

1 down 2 to go!
ok,I found the file you mentioned. There are actually two,XF86Config and XF86Config-4,but I assume you mean the first one.I scrolled down to the monitor section, but I don't understand what to edit.

I really need to change it because the screen is flickering and my eyes can't take it,lol.

This is the monitor section of my XF86Config file:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
  Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry"
  HorizSync 27-85
  Identifier "Monitor[0]"
  ModelName "6556 P72"
  VendorName "IBM"
  VertRefresh 50-150
  UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection
The HorizSync and VertFresh lines (in bold) are the ones you want to change.Be sure you dont enter a refresh rate greater than the one your monitor is rated at or it's goodbye monitor
If it looks different it's because I use the SuSE 8.1 on this computer.
The next time the screen goes blank and you have a cursor showing, hit the keys ctrl-alt-backspaceinstead of turning the power off. That keyboard combo restarts the x-server.

Mine says:

HorizSync 30-70
VertRefresh 47-120

I assume it's in 800x600 resolution. I would like the refresh rate to be 100. I don't understand what to enter because it looks like a range or something here.
