"DemoLinux" Question
I am completely unfamiliar with Linux, but I wish to learn about it.

I have downloaded both DemoLinux, and Knoppix Linux. http://www.demolinux.org/en/accueil.html
http://www.knoppix.net/

I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but I can't get my system to boot from either of these after I have burned them to a CD, and changed the boot sequence in the BIOS. Windows loads instead. I have the program on the CD, but I can't get it to run. It opens when I double-click it, but that's all.

I have downloaded the 690 plus MB program(s) to a folder on a second hard drive, then copied them to a CD, via Nero. I am assuming I need to do something prior to burning it to the CD, but I can't figure out exactly what.

If somebody is familiar with either of these and has a moment, could you please post a step-by-step for me.

Thanks in advance.

Do you see a bunch of folders and files when you open it?If not,you probably copied the iso instead of creating the CD from the iso.
What program did you burn the CD with?

I thought I downloaded the correct program, but now I am not so sure. I have since deleted it from the HD, and tossed the CD.

Do you happen to have a link for either of the DemoLinux, or Knoppix Linux programs? I am having a problem deciphering exactly what I need to download, as I am totally unfamiliar with Linux.

And to be sure, all I have to do is download the (correct) program and burn it to a CD, to run it from a CD. I don't have to extract anything, or do anything else?

Thanks.

Here's Knoppix.You need to understand,this is an operating system,not a program.

Yes, I understand. Bad verbiage on my part. I think the link is the same place I originally got it from, but perhaps I downloaded the wrong thing.

Thanks for the help.

PS -

I just went to the link, and after I accepted the license agreement, I am taken to another page. I think this is where I got lost before. What exactly do I download? (these are actually links from the mirror site)

Direct link:
ftp://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/pu...3-04-28-EN.iso

Its an ISO file, or a CD Image. Im guessing you just burnt the ISO as a data CD. ISO is actually a set of instructions on exactly how to burn the cd. Double click it, and it should open in Nero or whichever cd burner you use. Then, just click burn and it will do its thing.

When you start knoppix, it will ask you which kernel image to boot or something like that. When it asks, just type knoppix and hit enter.

Here's a link to some language codes so you can set a familiar language. You just type lang=language using the 2 letter abbreviation.
Good luck.

Thanks. I got the program to run. I think I burned it incorrectly on my first attempts.

I see your post for the language codes. I was actually going to ask if the UI on all KNOPPIX OSs are in German, or can I get an English version?

I'll play with the link you provided, perhaps that will answer my question.

Linux is very interesting, thats for the help.

Thanks, I'll try it again. The first time it was showing a transfer rate of something like 6KBs\ so I ended it and downloaded a German version somewhere else.

I highly reccommed you use a download accelerator for it.
And start downloading from several mirrors at once. Wait 5 minutes. Then cancel all except the one that went the fastest.

I am 8% finished with another site that's transferring at about 100 KB\s. Is the "EN" before the .iso indicating an English version?

Yes, thats english.

Most of the mirrors are also somewhat unreliable or are rebooted occasionally. If it stops downloading, if you used a dl accelerator, just pause it and try again in an hour or two.
