I copied the file to my home directory.I opened up the shell terminal and typed "su". then I typed "cd /home"the prompt said "[root@localhost home]" and I typed "cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=16 dev=0,0,0 Mandrake91-cd1-inst.i586.iso". It then said "cdrecord:No such file or directory. No read access for 'Mandrake91-cd1-inst.i586.iso' ".

I remembered I had a copy of EZ CD Creater on my ME install,so I burnt the disks and installed it.Now when I boot 9.1 it flashes to a GUI with nothing on it and then goes to the black screen with white text that says:

localhost login:

so I put my username in and then it says this:

[monte@localhost monte]$

so where do I go from there? How do I get into the GUI?

(--)FBDev:Mode"1024x768"needs hsync freq of 74.88 kHz. Deleted.(there are many of this type)

(--)FBdev: Hardware accelerater: None

(--)FBDev: No driver support for Hardware acceleration.

Waiting for x server to shut down.

Then it goes back to the prompt.

OK from windows goto nvidia's download page and download the latest linux driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run) and save it somewhere on windows (preferably a folder that has no spaces in the name). Then go back to linux, log in as root, type cd /mnt/windows/wherever/nvidia/driver/is. I usually copy this to /tmp, so type cp /NVIDIA* /tmp this will copy the driver to the /tmp directory. Then type cd /tmp. Now that you are in the /tmp directory, type ls to make sure the driver is in here. If it is there (and it should be) type (no quotes) 'sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run'. This will install the driver for you. We are almost there!!
Now to fix up your XF86Config-4 file! Still as root type: vi /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. This will open the file in the Vi text editor. Go to the Device section (down arrow) and look for a line that says Driver "nv" or it might say Driver "vesa". Change this to Driver "nvidia". To do this first hit the insert key on your keyboard, then delete the old "nv" or "vesa" and add "nvidia" Then add this line (still in the Device section) Option "NvAgp" "2".
Then we goto the Module section and make the following changes... make sure Load "glx" is there, and remove Load "dri" and Load "GLcore". To remove these lines just put a # at the front of each (ie #Load "dri"). Once this is done, hit the esc key then type ':wq' (no quotes). This will write the changes and quit the Vi editor. Now to test it out, from the prompt type 'startx' (no quotes). Report any problems! You might want to print these directions, so you can follow along while making your changes. Good Luck!

I downloaded the file. I put it on my "H" drive.I'm having trouble copying it to the /tmp directory. I viewed the driver file with Wordpad and it has a .txt extention now(It just had .run to begin with did'nt it?).Anyway, I log on as root ,and type:

cd /mnt/win_h

and then my prompt looks like this:

[root@localhost win_h]

I type the "ls" command and it is listed there(just learned that, lol).

when I type "cp /NVIDIA* /tmp" it says:

cp: cannot stat '/NVIDIA*':No such file or directory.

* is just a wild card character, I use it alot to save typing time. Just type cp NVIDIA* /tmp, you don't need the / when you are in the same directory as the file (my fault, sorry).

This is my XF86Config-4 file. Use it for a reference if you want. In the Monitor section you will have different HorizSync and VertRefresh numbers than mine. Make sure that the numbers that are here are for your monitor, don't use the numbers from my file. A Google search on your monitor make and model will get these numbers for you. So make the changes I listed above, check out your monitor numbers, and you should then be good to go. I know this is kinda of a pain in the arse, but once it's setup you won't have to think about it again.

This is what it should look like. Don't forget the changes in the "Module" section, and the monitor numbers. If you still have the user manual for your monitor they will be in that.
