Hi, I wanted to try Linux before I build my new computer, and I didn't want to partition my "small" (13GB) HDD.
I found the solution in dragonLinux. Reading the instructions it sound easy enough, but in practice I can't make to work.
Here is what I did (following advice from the FAQ and support forum):

Unzipped to a folder named dragon.
rebooted to DOS
from DOS promt:
cd\enter
cd\dragon\dragon~1\setup enter
setup.bat enter

and I get a bad command or file name.

Do any of you know the solution of the Riddle? Or, Do you know of any Linux version that will run from windows the same way that Dragon will?
I run win98se 128RAM IE5.5 geforce2 MX 100/200 13GB

I DON'T have a burner....

Many Linux distributions will run from within Windoze. Typically, these distributions use the UMSDOS file system that allows a single directory under DOS/Windoze to appear as a Linux partition. I'm not familiar with Dragon Linux, so the following suggestions may not be accurate, but I offer them anyway in case they are useful:

• Have you checked for a file named setup.exe or setup.com? Perhaps the extension is wrong (not .bat)? You might try running setup instead of setup.bat, for example.
• Have you checked to see what executables are in the \dragon\dragon~1\setup directory? Perhaps the correct filename is install.bat or install.exe or install.com.
• Have you checked to see if the file setup.bat exists in a different directory? You can do this by going to the top-level directory (cd \dragon) and using a command such as: DIR /S | FIND "SETUP" Note that this will show you all files with the name "setup" with any extension (.bat, .com, .exe, .pdf, .gif, etc.).

Hi, I checked and I do have a setup folder/directory in DOS. The problem is that I can't activate it.

What I mean is that I see if I use the DIR command, but when I input setup at the appropriate place I get a "bad command or filename".

The Install command only works after having activated the setup, according to the FAQ and support page.

Anyway, if you are aware of another alternative that will work like dragonlinux, I'll be happy to give it a try. Just bear in mind that I don't have a CD burner, so any program will have to d/l directly to my hdd and install from there.

OK, I did a little research (hey, I always like to learn!) and it turns out that Dragon Linux is specifically set up to run from DOS/UMSDOS. However, the information at http://www.dataphone.se/~dragon/thom...gon/README.TXT suggests that the installation should have created an icon on your desktop which you can use to launch Dragon Linux. If the information I read is correct, I suspect that you did not install Dragon Linux correctly -- anyway, have a look at the URL above, post your thoughts/experiences, and we'll go from there.

Thank you for your answer and your link, codejockey. I continued from it and I found a readme that was missing from my copy. I found it on the lite version so I discarded my copy and d/l the lite.
Reading through the document I found this:

You will need to copy the files that will boot and run the installation routine. To do this, you can run the X:\PREINST.BAT file on the CD-ROM. (Where X: is the letter of your CD-ROM.) This will copy a few files to your C: drive, in the C:\DRAGON directory. (It will create it if needed.)

No wonder id didn't work! It was assumed that the d/l had to be burned to a CD, and I d/l directly to my hdd.
I assume that I need the PREINST batch file for it to work. I did a search but I came out empty, and I don't know where to find it.

Could you assist me in finding this missing piece?
