Welcome to TSG!

You've come to the right place for technical support, commiseration and creative problem-solving. However, as good as the folks here are, a bit more info would be appreciated, such as:
  • what error message(s) do you receive, if any?
  • are you using dialup or DSL or ...? to connect to the internet?
  • are you trying to share your internet connection among several computers (local network)?

Additional info appreciated.

Have you tried Kstart>configuration>Mandrake Control Center>Internet?
You can go there and set it up.

Here is a link that may be helpful: http://mandrakeexpert.com/showarchive.php?arc=57799 Apparently, the alcatel.sys file (normally used in windoze) can be copied to /usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o (which is highly surprising, since the format of a .sys file and a .o file are very different, but anyway ...). After installing mgmt.o, you might try using the guide again (lynch's instructions) and see if things improve. Also, what is the specific model of your modem and what is the interface (USB, internal PC card, etc.)?

Any info appreciated. Hope this helps.

If the file is on a DOS-formatted floppy, you can copy it by using the mcopy command: mcopy a:alcatel.sys /path/to/mandrake/directory (assuming your floppy is or would be drive A in DOS). If the file is in your Windoze partition, you can mount the Windoze filesystem and use the standard cp command to copy the file. You will have to know which partition contains your Windoze installation if it hasn't already been configured for you during installation of Linux. So, where does the .sys file reside that you want to copy?
