Question Linux Red Hat 9.0 Installation Problem
I am trying to learn how to use Linux now so i tried to install Red Hat 9 on an extra computer i have. During installation everything seems to go smoothly, everything seems to be set up properly. When i reboot it goes through startup and then it comes to a First Bootup message and right after that the screen goes blank. The monitor then acts like no signal is coming to it. The computer is still on though. All this happens before i can get to any logon screen, i believe that is where it is suppose to go next. Please if you have an idea of what might be going on i would greatly appreciate the help.

Was your exact monitor on the list of monitors that Linux already recognized?

BTW Welcome to TSG!

It was CTX VL700 series but i know it was not under CTX it was under something else i cant remember.....there were two other series with it. If i need to reinstall to figure out which one it was i will but i do remember it was autodetected as a CTX VL700 series which is what it is.

What did you do?Reinstall? Is the system running OK now?
When was the last time you ran this spare box?Did you fire it up with the existing OS before you installed Linux?
If it still does that, just how far into the boot process does it go?You should see a couple pages worth of messages scroll down the screen before you get a login, wether it's a CLI login or GUI login.
Are you seeing any error messages before the screen goes blank?
When you say the monitor acts like there is no signal going to it,do you mean it stays blank and the indicator light turns yellow like it's in power-saving mode,or does the light stay green?
A couple more things that may help narrow this down:when you installed Red Hat,did you get a full-blown GUI installer or a text-based menu -style installer? And did it offer you the chance to configure and test Xwindows?I seem to recall (from RH 7.3) that RH does the X configuration pretty early in the installation process.
Sorry for all the questions but it will help to know the answers
HTH

I had the same problem trying to install Mandrake 8.0 on an old Gateway 300 mhz machine with both the onboard video controler and an ATI 128 Rage Pro card. I would do the install and all looked good. I would reboot and before i could logon, the screen would bo blank and the computer kept running. I never got it figured out. I recently installed Red Hat 8.0 on the same machine with the ATI card and all went perfect and everything is working. I know this is no help, but i wanted to let you know you have company with that type of problem.

Okay, i dont have answers to all your questions just yet but i do have a few answers. The monitor goes blank and the indicator goes yellow like it is in power savings mode. The spare comp im using hasnt been used much but i did fire it up before installing Red Hat. It had Windows 98 se on it and it seemed to work fine. I got a full blown GUI installer when i installed but i dont believe it gave me the chance to test the xwindows system. It did however ask to test the installation disks. Also, this system does have two video cards. One on the motherboard and an ATI Radeon 32 MB(ITs just called Radeon 32 mb no numbers like 7000 or anything) and its a PCI card. I will try to get more info to answer your other questions I dont have the oppurtunity to find them right now. Thank you for your help.

Same Problem
Monkeyman007, I had the EXACT same problem that you are describing. I was able to fix it by lowering the screen resolution. Give that a try!

Talking Problem Solved!
Thank you guys for all your suggestions and comments on my problem. What i ended up doing was taking out the PCI video card and just used the onboard one this time. After i re installed Linux everything worked just great. If i have the time i might try to install the video card again but since i dont plan to do any video intensive stuff i probably wont. Anyways my problems solved and thanks for your help!
