I'm in the habit of leaving my computer on all the time (except in thunderstorms, no UPS), but what I'd like to do is disable the nic while I'm away (I'm already behind a physical firewall). What I've tried is '#ifconfig eth0 down' to disable which works fine. Now when I enter '#ifconfig eth0 up' nothing happens (had to reboot to bring it back up). Anyone have an idea about this? Not too sure what other options I should add to that '...up' command. Would restarting an init script work (maybe DHCP)? I'm running Mandrake 9.1.

Hate replying to myself, but I'm also running gkrellm. Not sure if that would get in the way of anything. Thanks for reading these posts guys.

If you use DHCP you could try:
ifconfig eth0 down
dhcpcd eth0
Other than that,I guess it would take a reboot to restart the nic.
I use a cable modem with a stand-by switch so I just use that to dis-connect from the clouds

My box runs 24/7 also.

Thx for responding lynch. I did some digging on Google and found this... http://lwn.net/Alerts/19741/. To restart the network just enter (as root) '#service network restart'. I gave it a test run, entered '#ifconfig eth0 down', then brought it back up with '#service network restart', no prob!
