Simple answer I believe is Yes.

Do you want to keep another OS on the same PC or replace everything on there with RH?

Hi

I am still learning RH, so....
I think you need to format your drive, and then re-install your other OS's I think ( may want to wait for other advice on this).

If you install LILO then it will allow you to have more than one OS and pick which one you want on boot up.

You make your boot/format disk off of your ISO CD of RH, in case you didn't know.

You have 4 partitions but you dont say if the windows OSs are using all of them or if they just use 2 or 3 or whatever. If you have an empty partition that is about 3-5 GB in size, you can preserve the existing OSs and format the unused one for Redhat.Even better would be to delete the unused partition and tell RH to install itself on unused space where the partition used to be,preserving the 2 windows OSs.
Keep in mind that with RH 8,you will have read/write access to win98 but no access to XP unless it is formatted as fat32.RH 8 doesnt support the ntfs filesystem.

Just my $0.02 worth ...

You should not have to format any partition except the one that you wish to use to install Linux. You can preserve your other O/Ses and RedHat will try to make them available to you from Linux. In general, you should install other O/Ses first, then Linux -- so if they're already installed, you just need an unused partition for Linux.

Hope this helps.

i have four partitions and one of them of 5gb is absolutely clean

You dont have to repartition the whole drive. Is the clean partition also the last one?It will be called somthing like hda6 or hda7 as I'm guessing you have 1 primary partition,an extended partition containing 3 logical partitions.
If XP is fat32 you should have no problems reading the XP files from Linux.

Let me get this straight.

I also have a 20gig partitioned into 4 5gigers. C: is Win2k and the rest (D:, E: and F are files/games I can move elsewhere without problems. If I understand this thread correctly, I can clean D: and install Linux there. Can I install into E: or F:?

Will the pc boot C:Win2k automatically (with or without LILO) because Linux is not on the primary drive?

Also, I have a 100gig full of music and movies formatted in NTFS. If I install Linux (wherever), will I get access to those movies and music in a Linux environment?

One more question. I have a copy of RH 6.2 and I am downloading Ark Linux. Anyone know of Ark and what is your take on it? I would like to try re-installing RH 6.2 but it's age may bring forth hardware issues as I have upgraded recently.

OK, maybe I can answer at least some of your questions ...

(1) You should be able to install anywhere on your disk (D, E or F).

(2) Booting is a complex subject, and even the short answer isn't so short. But the bottom line is that you have a choice of whether to install LILO and where to install it. You can dual-boot with LILO, but you will have to modify your lilo.conf file to recognize your Windoze installation. If you install LILO, it typically will default to booting Linux (only), but that varies by distribution, so your results may vary. Probably the simplest technique (especially as you're getting things sorted out) is not to install LILO. Create a boot floppy during installation (maybe two or three, just to be safe) and then use the boot floppy whenever you want to boot Linux instead of Win2000. You can always install LILO later.

(3) Access to NTFS filesystems in Linux is read-only (at best; as Lynch pointed out, RedHat doesn't support NTFS at all). Some EXPERIMENTAL code is being developed to allow write access to NTFS partitions, but it's not ready for prime-time yet.

(4) I know nothing of Ark -- but would be interested to learn. Where did you find it?

Hope this helps.
