Lindows... Please god help me!
Being that Lindows is an offshoot of Linux... I'm hoping this problem can be solved in this forum...

Got a Lindows special from Tiger. Booted the beast up and everything seemed normal. Until... I tried to setup the internet connection.

Tried to communicate with the modem... Wouldn't. (Message- "Modem will not answer"). Soo... messing with it I found that I got it to communicate if I turned off "Flow Control" or set it to "XON/XOFF". Even though help said to set Flow Control to "RTS/CTS". In either case though... if I try to connect to the internet it get's stuck in an infinite initialization. (Get a message "initializing modem..." and it never stops.)

Now... I'm very close to installing Windows98 and calling it even. But I'm thinking that there is a possibility that the modem is toast. And quite frankly... in this Lindows platform I'm not sure.

So should I send the computer back for a replacement... install Windows so I can find out if it is a bad modem... Or is this a bug of Linux "Lindows" that is common and can be fixed?

Have you contacted Tiger for any tech support? Presumably, the computer they sold you was working, and they should know how to help you configure it for internet access. In reality, you may have a modem that requires drivers not supplied with the machine (so-called "Winmodems" present problems for Linux because they rely on Windoze to perform functions that are normally performed by modem hardware). I'd suggest proceeding in parallel: contact Tiger and see what they say about your problem (good luck) and continue to post here with more specifics about which modem you have, etc. For the record, you will want RTS/CTS flow control (aka hardware flow control) rather than either of the alternatives you mentioned. It's also possible that there's a configuration problem with the modem and that the hardware is fine.

Hope this helps.

FIRST OFF,THANK YOU FOR BEING SO THOUGHTFUL TO THE SIGHT-CHALLENGED MEMBERS OF TSG

I'd say follow codejockey's suggestion. And I would add emphasis on the Tiger-Direct part.

<FONT FACE="Arial" SIZE=3">Most likely getting any information about Lindows from Tiger is about as likely as flying to Mars on a Unicorn... But I'll give it a shot.
They also included a tech support number to Lindows.

On further reflection on the symptons... the slack jaws most likely did put a winmodem in the Lindows machine. About 99% of the inexpensive modems today are winmodems. To keep them on the cheap.

I'll get the modem type and model number and post it here. I'll also give the tech support a shot.

Thanks
</FACE>

I got the modem to work... but the journey to this was very interesting.

So behold the yarn I spin my tech friends. And amaze at the means to this end.

First... Called Tiger. (Mostly for comic relief and wasn't dissapointed.) They first made me out as a crank call... But after daring them to look in their catalog for this "Lindows" machine they had to admit their is indeed a Lindows operating system. To no suprise they didn't have a clue what to do. (Like they would if it was "Windows").
So I gave the Lindows tech support a go. First... They were absolutly dumbfounded on how a "Intel" modem got into a Lindows machine. (Sorry... forgot the model number) So... after about a 2 minute focus group heard in the background accured... I was sent to a "Red Hat" sight to get a driver.
Red Hat? ?
I guess Linux is Linux under any skin.
Droped it into the dev draw in the Root Directory under the name tty1 and everything was golden.

Good that it's working well. . I collect computers like others collect baseball cards.

Thanks for all the help

WTG! -- and in the interest of helping everyone else who may be struggling with similar problems, how about posting the specifics (modem model, RedHat driver name, etc.)? Glad to hear you sorted it all out!
