Can some one tell me if there is a command in linux to find the memory usage of a file at runtime?

You might try the top command, which lists processes and memory usage in descending order (highest to lowest). The same info can be gotten from ps -ale (from the command line).

Hope this helps.

Not sure about other distro's, but on Mandrake typing the free command gives a nice rundown of physical and swap memory.
