From the Kernel Up
Does anybody know of a good site the explains how to build a linux distro starting with just the kernel and installing everything needed from the sources

I want to learn more about the workings of linux and seting up a linux system by hand from the ground up would help immensely (I'd actually know where things are and what they do )

Anyhow, I saw www.byolinux.org, but it hasn't been updated in ages and is outdated. Is there anything more current?

Help.

u might consider using gentoo

it's pretty well a build from scratch.

Note: This is can be VERY difficult! I spent countless hours trying to get various cards/components to work right.

Well drivers shouldn't be too hard with this computers hardware.
I don't plan to run X, I just need to have the NICs working.

I plan on getting the core installed, and setting up;
NAT
openLDAP
DNS (Maybe)
qMail
apache
PHP
Perl
mySQL
SSH
LFS
Samba
amanda
and an IDS system

I recently had a box hacked, and since I don't really know how it's set up, I don't know how they got in, by knowing what is installed and running, I'll know what to keep up to date, patch wise, and hopefully can avert a future catastrophe.
