Hey Guys,

Here's the scenario,

Master drive (hda) Win XP
Slave drive (hdb) RedHat 8.0

I am trying to install grub to the MBR of the master drive (Win XP) to dual boot. I had to reinstall Windoze and it installed it's own bootloader in the mbr (Surprise Suprise).

I've booted off the RH CD and gone upgrade, but it says that I am not upgrading the kernel so it isn't installing the grub.

I have then booted off the CD and upgraded a program (added it in) to make it happy, and it still says I am not upgrading the kernel
so bugger off.

I then booted off the floppy, to start Redhat (& run the command "grub-install /dev/hda), it asked me which partition to mount as root, I typed "linux /dev/hdb5" and it came back with an error "no init found".

I would rather not go through a whole install of RH just to install grub. I would be very gratefull if anyone could give me some info on this.

It may be that you need to 'recompile the kernel.' This is the upgrading you are referring to. If Redhat advised you to do so, you should. Follow the link below.

Try it without the "linux" argument.Just the partition /dev/hdb6
You dont have to recompile the kernel to re-install Grub.

Heh Guys,

Finally got it on.
I had to boot off the cd and upgrade the kernel to SMP to make it happy. (sigh)
If anyone has a better idea of getting grub or lilo to install on the first hard disk (hda), I'd appreicate any info.
