I have done another install and by all means it looks like everything has gone well then I give it the $ spamassassin < spam.txt to test it and this is what I get :

[pedro@localhost Mail-SpamAssassin-2.53]$ spamassassin < spam.txt
bash: spam.txt: No such file or directory
[pedro@localhost Mail-SpamAssassin-2.53]$

So I dont know what to make of it , this is the same message I get after 3 downloads and install and then there is the perldoc command that I get , No such file or directory.

Success got he perldoc command working , codejockey starting to understand what you mean by getting everything case perfect lol still cant see it working with test .

This error is pretty straightforward: you have invoked spamassassin and given it the file spam.txt as input. Since you didn't add a pathname to spam.txt, the shell (bash) is looking in the current directory for a file named spam.txt and not finding it. Are you sure the file spam.txt (be aware of case, etc.!) is in the directory where you invoke spamassassin? Note that if you have installed spamassassin, you may be able to invoke if from anywhere on your system, but the spam.txt file may not be where you are when you invoke spamassassin. Try a quick ls -l in the location where you invoke spamassassin to verify that the file spam.txt is present (and readable! -- should have permissions similar to rwx-r-x-r-x). If it is not present, you will need to use a full pathname to locate the file for spamassassin; your command might look something like this: spamassassin < /var/tmp/spam.txt (if your spam.txt file was in /var/tmp).

Hope this helps -- additional info appreciated.

Thanks for the encouragement and the help codejockey located the email as a file spam.txt and got it testing OK and set up filters in KMail to get it working and it seems to be working up to date .

In the meantime I got the popfile zip amd installed it too and can get it working but am not sure about setting up the filters etc.

Will I be setting one against the other or should I get rid of popfile since I got spamassassin working ?

First, I'll add my kudos to the ones Lynch already gave you -- great work!

Now, about your popfile + spam assassin question ... I confess I don't know how spam assassin works (since I don't run it), but popfile is essentially a proxy that sits between your local email delivery and the internet (OK, that's simplified, but it's still pretty close). That's different from how most spam filters work, and the advantage is that it's transparent to your normal mail delivery software. So it's quite possible that popfile and spam assassin could work together, although I'm not sure why you'd want to use both of them. However, I recommend against trying to use both together; at best, you'll have redundancy, and at worst you'll have conflicting decisions about how to process your mail. You can certainly try each one and see if you prefer one or the other, but I wouldn't try to use them together unless you felt very confident you understood how they each worked.

Hope this helps.

I have SpamAssassin working good in RH Linux 8.0 now , I have POPfile loaded but not set up with any filters but will most likely take it out when I work out how to . But I have POPfile working in winXP but it is taking a bit of setting up with it .

This has been a good learning experience for me , but I like linux so I think for me it is worth the effort and patience almost as good as opal mining

And I thank you codejockey and lynch for the encouragement to keep going .

Anyone who mines opals already has what it takes to conquer Unix/Linux. If I'm not mistaken, one of the major opal mining areas in Australia features temperatures of 120 degrees F combined with generally inhospitable conditions topside, so the entire town is underground -- and that's only the living conditions!

G'day, mate --
