Unhappy startx problems
when attempting to startx i get an error that no devices detected. i have tried several time to reinstall Red Hat Linux 9 with a different setup that i thought was right. I even accepted the defaults thinking Linux found the correct one.

SetUp Info: I have it running on a Compaq Presario 2105 Laptop with a dual boot Linux/XP. other than getting xwindows to start everything on both partitions seems ok.

I dont know much about Linux and could use any guidence one could offer.

My guess is that the video chipset used in your laptop is not recognized by X-Windows. It is also possible that your XF86Config file is not correct, and the device entry for your card/chipset is missing, incomplete or wrong. Usually this file is /etc/X11/XF86Config (although it can be installed in several places). You might review this file to verify the entries or post it here in case it contains a clue to the problem. If you can determine the chipset used for video display in your laptop (probably in the product specs), you might check www.xfree86.org for updated info on support for this chipset.

Hope this helps.

Here is one person's experience with the Compaq Presario 2105 Laptop .
Seems he used the vesa driver with the screenbuffer(I think he means framebuffer) turned on.

Thanks for the info Lynch, I also spent the last two days trying to load Linux on my Lifebook for a Unix course and I kept getting an error loading x, the system wanted to use the vesa driver for my video card and I knew it was an ati, so finally I let it win and now it works. TSG is a lifebook savior.
Thanks again
