My guess is that the video chipset used in your laptop is not recognized by X-Windows. It is also possible that your XF86Config file is not correct, and the device entry for your card/chipset is missing, incomplete or wrong. Usually this file is /etc/X11/XF86Config (although it can be installed in several places). You might review this file to verify the entries or post it here in case it contains a clue to the problem. If you can determine the chipset used for video display in your laptop (probably in the product specs), you might check
