Have not tried SuSe, but have always been intrigued by it. It has an excellent reputation (especially for new users of Linux), and from what I hear it's a solid distribution. I'd be interested in your evaluation if you try it.

Until recently,I ran SuSE(7.1 - 8.1)exclusively.I like SuSE a lot,I'm just giving Mandrake another spin(I like )
Anyway,SuSE is just as easy to install as Mandrake or Redhat. It has what I think is a superior configuration tool called YaST2(Yet another Setup Tool 2) that can take care of almost every system configuration need you have. And the SaX2 X configuration tool is about the easiest to use of all the major distros. There is tons of packages provided with SuSE and thier web site has many nice help features.
A few things that are different are:
  • They put some files in odd places but claim compliance with the Linux Standard Base.
  • Non SuSE packages can be installed but need a different procedure to get recorded in the package database. If you dont follow the procedure you might get reverted to an older version of a package after an online update.
  • Then there is the linker cache which some folks call the SuSE registry, which is a bit unfair because if you screwed up part of the linker cache it wouldnt crash the whole system like it could in Windows.
These are not things I dislike about SuSE;just things about SuSE that I know are different from the other distros.
HTH

I've used SuSE on and off but never developed a taste for it. I did run it as a firewall for 6 months, or so, on a PPro200. It rocked! My wife really liked SuSE. She wants me to put it back on her computer (we have 8.0 right now). My firewall is now running Mandrakes MNF. Pretty sweet.
