Unhappy Why won't my Conexant modem work?
I just installed red hat linux 8 along side with windows me (booo!). It's a gateway that came with a HCF Conexant 56k internal modem card. I went to linuxant and downloaded the exact driver, for my exact modem, for the version of linux kernel I have and still it doesn't recognize that I have the modem. I tried to set the port to ttyS1 through ttyS5. My modem is in COM3 in windows so it should be at ttyS2. The instructions with the driver say that ttySHCO or something should be created but I don't see it. There is no /dev/modem symbolic link either.

I'm really new to linux, I've just learned how to move around in the shell with ls, rm, mk, etc. I'm usually pretty resourceful and I can almost always find the answer if there is one, but this is linux, I'm in unfamiliar territory and I've come to my troubleshooting limit. I don't want to have to go buy another modem. Somebody please help. Thanks.

Did you ever get your modem working? I finally got mine working after 3 weeks of frustration. If you need help, let me know.

the problem with the PNP modems is that linux cannot recognise them, since the modem control itself is software-based instead of hardware-based. My suggestion is that you might want to look into getting an external modem. if you have a free com port (which I suspect you probably do, seeing as though everything is starting to shift to USB), a USR 56k external fax modem works quite nicely with linux.

Is your modem a Modem/Sound card combo. If so then make sure that you download and install your Riptide sound drivers also. They state that the sound card drivers need to be installed in order for the modem to work properly.
