Linux Questions: Drives and dual Screens
I have three partitions on my HDD. The Linux main (Mandrake 9.1), the Linux Swap, and a windows XP (NTFS).

From the Linux GUI, how can I access my files on the Windows partition?

Also, My video card supports two monitors, and using Windows XP, i have become accustomed to utilizing both. how can i enable this feature in Mandrake 9.1?

Thanks,

Nick

To make your Windoze partitions visible from Linux, you must mount them on a Linux directory (typcially one created for this purpose). In order to mount your Windoze partitions properly, you will need to know: (1) the type of filesystem used (e.g., FAT32, NTFS, etc.) and (2) the location of the partition on the disk (e.g., /dev/hda1, /dev/hda5, etc.). I'm not sure what you mean by the "Linux GUI", but on the chance that you're using KDE as your desktop, you might try K->system->kwikdisk which will guide you through the mount/unmount process.

If you are not using KDE, or this doesn't work for you, feel free to post again, and we'll go from there.

Hope this helps.

I am running KDE 3.1, on Mandrake 9.1.

By GUI, I meant Graphical User Interface, as opposed to a command prompt.

K->system->kwikdisk doesn't exist, since there is no "system" menu on the "K" menu.

I do have K> configuration> hardware> kwikdisk, but it is listed as a removable media utility. Nothing happens when I select it.

Thanks for your assistance,

Nick M. Rahl

I figured out how to get to my files... It turned out that kwikdisk had acctually opened, it just didn't give me any indication, and moved immediatly to the taskbar.

I am still looking for a response to the multiscreen question though...

If you go to www.mandrakeexpert.com and type "dual monitors" (without the quotes) in the "ask your question" box, you'll see several responses. The bottom line appears to be that getting dual monitors working often depends on card-specific drivers, so depending on which card you are using, some of this info may be helpful.

Since I don't run Mandrake or have dual monitors (I'm so efficient I make all of my mistakes on one monitor! ), I'm afraid I can't be much help -- but hopefully some of the info at mandrakeexpert will be useful.

Hope this helps.
