I have a red hat (9) machine and a win2K PRO machine behind a cable rounter.

I am trying to use the mount command on the linux box to share a folder on the win2K box. The command seems to hang and I get an error however when I go to the linux desktop folder views, I can see the shared files from the win2k box . Here is the command I am executing

mount -t smbfs -o username="<userid>",password=<password> //192.168.2.100/pictures /mnt/public
4401: session request to 192.168.2.100 failed (Called name not present)
4401: session request to 192 failed (Called name not present)

I am new to linux. This seems like it failed. Can anyone explain what is happening?

Try using the machine name instead of the IP address. I think what is happening is that your workgroup is being searched for a machine named "192.168.2.100" -- and the search is coming up empty.

I tried it with the machine name. It cannot find the w2Kcomputer and gives a "no route to host" message

It seems to work the other way. I was just curious about the error messages.

Interesting. Typically, when I receive these sorts of error messages, the command has failed, and I can't see any Windoze shares. I'm surprised that you should receive a message such as "called name not present" (which is usually fatal) yet still see the files from the Windoze share. To get some more info about what may be happening, you might try the following immediately after your mount command completes: echo $? This will report the completion code from the mount command, which may provide some hint about what is going on. Can you ping the Win2K machine from Linux (using IP address and machine name)?

thanks for your help on this.

I added the echo $? statement after the mount command and get a zero, which I presume to mean no error.

The other thing is I can ping the windoze machine via IP but cannot via machine name . I get an "unknown host".

what i use for both of my mandrake machines to hook up to the 2k machines on the network is samba
