How-to get KPPP installed in Debian
I first installed Linux in Feb 2003...still a NOOB!

I currently have WinXP, Libranet Linux and Debian 3.0r1 on my machine. WinXP and Libranet run fine...my problem is with Debian. I cannot get my modem to dial up with 'PON'. My modem is a Actiontec PM560LKI PCI model. I have this modem working with WinXP and Libranet. I also had it working when I had Red Hat 8 installed. Also works with Knoppix. So it is compatible with Linux.

I have had help on other forums and have tried many things to get this modem to work in Debian. Using 'PON' and 'Wvdial...no luck getting it to dial-up. I did get it to dial-up in Knoppix using 'PON', but it wouldn't connect to my ISP.

Libranet, Red Hat and Knoppix all used KPPP to dial up and they all worked fine for me. But for some reason Debian does not have KPPP on my 7 CD set. It looks to me like KPPP is the answer. I don't have internet access in Debian yet so I can't apt-get it.

So, being the NOOB I am, how do I get KPPP downloaded with my Libranet installation and over to and installed on my Debian installation? I need some step-by-step instructions to do this. I have a Floppy drive.

I've used Google and looked at a bunch of forums but I can't find what I need to know.

Thanks!

Lynch and twill...thanks for your replies!

I was able to get KPPP downloaded to a floppy.

I found instructions on another forum on how to get the floppy read and installed on my Debian installation. They were:

1. Become ROOT
2. mount /floppy
3. dpkg -i /floppy/name of KPPP pkg.deb
4. umount /floppy

In Debian, this would not work. The floppy read for a sec or two and then returned the message of: 'no file or directory' . Apparently did not match the name correctly.

So I sez to myself, 'self, that name is right'. Lets try this same thing on my Libranet installation and see what happens there. BIG mistake! The floppy was read, name was OK and KPPP was installed which caused all kinds of dependency errors. KPPP was totally screwed up.
Had to re-install my Libranet installation...oh well, live and learn.

So, the above instructions work in Libranet but will not work in Debian. I can get 'PON' to dial up (won't connect) with Libranet but 'PON' won't do anything in Debian.

My Libranet /etc/fstab looks like this:
/dev/fd0 /floppy vfat,auto defaults,user,noauto 0 0

My Debian /etc/fstab looks like this:
/dev/fd0 /floppy auto user,noauto 0 0

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!
