RedHat Questions
OK, I downloaded the RedHat 9 CD images, loaded Linux up on one of my machines, and fired it up.

I'm generally happy, but a couple of small issues came up. How do you change the computer name on the network? I used the GUI tool to change it from localhost (which doesn't fly on a Windows network) to linux, but now it's nowhere to be found when browsing from the Windows machines. When it was named localhost, it showed up in Network Neighborhood of the Windows machines, but obviously failed when you attempted to browse it with a duplicate network name. I can ping the machine, and browse from the linux machine to the Windows machines, so it appears that Samba is working.

I noticed the automatic updater had updates to download, so I registered it and fired it up. It downloaded a ton of stuff, but still indicates the updates are pending. When you go through the process again, the updater indicates the updates were already downloaded. I believe that, but where are they, and how do I apply them?

i'm a real newbie so i don't know if this will help. try changing your computer name back to localhost. then see if the windoze computer sees localhost in the neiborhood. if so try changing your smb.conf file to read netbios name = linux. restart samba see if you see a computer named linux is in the neiborhood network. if so try browsing it. good luck

I dont use a GUI on my server, but open up a command line and type: man up2date.

You probably have up2date set to not run the rpm's after they are downloaded.

From the man pages:

/etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date
Configuration settings for Update
Agent.

/etc/sysconfig/rhn/systemid
Unique system identification certifi-
cate for Red Hat Network.

/etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date-keyring.gpg
The default keyring used specificaly
for up2date, if used with versions of
rpm that support it (rpm-4.0.4 or
higher)

/var/spool/up2date
The spool directory where rpm stores
package lists, package headers and
packages.

/var/log/up2date
This is the log file for up2date.

Thanks for the replies, I sorted out those issues. I didn't have the updates automagically applied, I fixed that and it ground away for an hour putting them all in.

The naming thing was done correctly, it just took a few hours for the Windows machines to believe that a change had taken place!

I'm on to a new problem, configuring printing to a print server with this beast! I have yet to figure out how to print to either my LaserJet III on an Intel Netport Pro 100 print server, or the HP PSC-750 on an IO-Gear USB print server. I've given up on the Xerox XD-100, since they use the Windows GDI interface to format their print, kinda' like the WinModem of printers.

I have gotten Knoppix to print to my LaserJet 5P that is hooked up to my D-Link 704p so you should be able to get the LaserJet III to work. I am trying to find my documentation on it. I am sure it would be kind of similar.

I can't even get Linux Print Manager to find the print server, never mind print to it!
