Question Kde 3.1.3
Does anybody know where to get KDE 3.1.3 for Redhat Linux 7.3?

I can only find it for Redhat Linux 8.0 or 9.0, please if anyone knows let me know, it looks so cool!

I've looked on kde.org and googled it but no luck

Many thanks,

nester

If you're using Debian you can put this in your apt source file
deb http://download.kde.org/stable/3.1.3/Debian stable main

When you do an apt-get dist-upgrade it will upgrade the KDE package.

Check this site for other flavors: http://www.kde.org/download/

Hi twill,

Thanks for your reply, I am using Redhat Linux 7.3, I have looked on kde.org but I can only find it for Redhat 9.0, I even tried google but no luck, it seems like I will have to wait for some third party packager to make it. Somebody somewhere suggested I upgrade bash and get the latest Gcc compiler, then install KDE 3.1.3 for version 9.0 on 7.3, do you think this would work?

Oh well soon I hope to be getting Redhats latest version, I may even try out a different distro altogether, I might take a look at Debian, would you recommend it?

Thanks again,

nester

Nester,

No problem. I didn't pay attention to the 7.3 part of RH. Yeah, upgrading bash and your compiler and then recompiling the 9.0 install on your 7.3 should work just fine.

Otherwise, if you don't feel that adventurous you can check out installing apt for RH. This site has more info: http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/

At the bottom of the page it mentions that there are new KDE packages available for 7.3 so running apt-get dist-upgrade should get you the new version of KDE. Just make sure to update your apt sources file with the correct web addresses to get that information.

If you do decide on a new flavor of linux, I definitely recommend Debian. While it is not always for the faint of heart, it has quite a few cool features that I don't see other flavors using. It has a network install which requires only the boot disks to boot your machine and install the network drivers to start an entire debian install. It also uses the apt package system by default. This system is comepletely insane with the things you can do. You can search for keywords with "apt-cache search keyword" and "apt-get install package" to install packages. Beyond that, running "dpkg --configure -a" will configure all downloaded packages that haven't been installed yet and "apt-get -f install" will check for any dependencies automatically and give you the option to download any of those dependencies.

It's highly efficient for the linux user who only wants the packages (s)he needs. If you decide you want something, use apt-get and get it!

Anyhow, you probably can't tell that I use Debian. Though I was a RH user originally I moved not too long ago and am loving it.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice, I think I will have a go at upgrading bash and the compiler and see how it goes!

I think when I change distro's I will try Debian, I like the sound of the apt package system.

Thanks alot for your help, I'll let you know if KDE 9.0 works out ok on 7.3 providing all goes well with upgrading bash & Gcc!

Thanks again,

nester
