[iSmell]

Hello.
I am trying to replace XFree86 4.3 with 4.2 so I can install the devel branch of gatos and use the video in/out on my ATI radeon ddr card. I downloaded the binaries (and the source for later) from XFree86.org, backed up the /etc/X11 and /usr/X11R6 folders, and ran the install.sh script. When I reboot, it gets to the log in and the mouse works, but the keyboard doesn't. It also switches from the text boot process to the X env. earlier, but then it sits there for a little while with nothing on the screen. I think during this time, the boot process is still going on and the keyboard still works because I can ctr-alt-F1 and see it finish sometimes.
I'm kind of new to all of this and I've tried a bunch of things that worked a lot less well than what I've described above.
If anybody has any advice, I would appreciate it. I'm getting kind of frustrated.
