[Mandrake 9.1] Modem Woes - Have log info
Edit: Since I can't delete, I'll just edit

The modem is a dud anyways. Looks like I might be off to buy a new external and a dialup router.. crapzilla

Maybe not such a dud -- a tweak or two may let it perform to its full potential. What are the problems you are having (slow connection speed? erratic data transfer? configuration nightmares trying to get a WinModem to work under Linux?). Sometimes new hardware is the only/best answer, but it might be worth trying a $0.29 solution first ...

Additional info appreciated.

It's not a winmodem, and it doesn't work well under windows anyways. It connects very slow, I get bad ping times, and it doesn't even work in linux (even though it says "linux" on the box). Either way, I'm sending it back because I'm going to keep looking for older 33.3 modems - which ironically work better where I live than 56k modems.

Your result that 33.3 bps modems appear to work better than 56K modems suggests it may be a protocol/speed negotiation problem -- which often can be corrected by initializing the modem differently. At worst, you should be able to make your 56K modem act like a 33.3 modem and see identical results.

Configuring modems under Linux can be a bit tricky (setserial is a lifesaver!) but a real hardware modem should perform fine under Linux. I'm in if you want to give it a go ...

Hope this helps.

Well, I've tried every INT string humanly possible with my other hardware modem, it's a 56k USR Pro modem, and I still cannot get it to preform correctly. But I wouldn't mind playing around, if you wanted. That other modem went back to the store already, but I have this other one... however, I'm (hopefully) picking up a SMC router with dialup-modem capbalities.

Hmmm ... seems like you've got plenty of options (). Tell you what -- if you have problems with whatever you decide to try next, let me know (email, post, whatever) and I'll see what I can do. Hang on to the log(s) if you can; there may be some info that turns out to be useful later.
