etc/hosts ignored
On Redhat 9 system, ping does not resolve names using hosts file.
Ping localhost returns - unknown host.
127.0.0.1 localhost is first line in etc/hosts.
added all: all to hosts.allow but no joy.
can someone please point me in right direction

Can you ping IP addresses or the localhost ip.

Also wondering if you can ping domain names on the internet.

DNS names resolved OK.
Found an entry in nsswitch.conf that regulates whether the hosts file is used.
added ' hosts: files dns' and problem was resolved.
