My RH9 linux machine does not seem to be responding to http or ftp requests anymore. SSH works fine though.

When they worked, the machine ran behind a router with a graphical interface. Now it has no router and is running in text only mode.

As far as I can tell from "ps -ax" the services are running.

The tricky part is that I am not physically at the machine anymore and so can only access it via ssh with no xWindows.

Any suggestions on what to look at? I'm new at Linux so please speak in English.

Same thing happened to me yesterday.What'd I do?
I just reset the router and ran ifup eth0 .

You guys got any firewalls running.

As ROOT could do an: iptables -L

Just to see what your firewall may look like. I think RH9 uses iptables as it firewall.

"ifup eth0" did not make any difference.

This machine is connected directly with a real IP address - no router or firewall.

See if it is running.
/etc/init.d/./httpd status

Restart Apache
/etc/init.d/./httpd restart

Download SuperScan and scan the servers IP address to make sure those ports are open as well. Although it looks like the ports are open.

According to "/etc/init.d/./httpd status" the server is running.

However, according to SuperScan, no ports are open. But I am connecting to it with ssh without any problems.

By trying to connect out from that machine, it seems to be pinging ip addresses fine, but it isn't resolving domain names.

Could that be related? How do I give it dns servers to use?

If your server is directly connected to your Cable modem, I would assume it should be getting the DNS server addresses from your ISP's Dhcp server. Your name servers should be in /etc/resolv.conf.

Try typing setup at your shell prompt and see if you can get to the text based configuration.

SOLVED!

I made a couple modification with "setup" and rebooted the machine. That solved the name resolving issue.

During the process though, I realized that I had been using an ip address that was one digit off from the actual one. The bad address was also entered in the dynamic dns service. That means that all my ftping and httping was to the wrong machine.

What do you know

ssh worked because I had entered the correct address into my ssh client at the beginning.

Even SuperScan now returns everything I've been looking for. Someone else's machine was getting a lot of poking for a while there
