Hi i am new to linux and i changed my generic display driver to a nvidia geforce but now when i startx the screen is just black. how can i change back my display driver from shell? and linux is not detecting my dvd rw, what do i need to do? Many thanks.

You might review the information at ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...496/README.txt especially in section 3. You will need to edit your XF86Config file and restore the original driver name (quite possibly vesa -- and even if it wasn't, vesa is likely a good starting point).

thank you codejockey i will go thought that readme you suggested. but what about my dvd rom? linux is not detecting it. any other ideas? Thanks again

You're welcome.

It's possible that DVD support is not currently built in to your kernel. If so, you will need to reconfigure/rebuild your kernel with DVD support enabled. It's also (at least theoretically) possible that your DVD requires an additional driver. Have you checked the manufacturer's web site to see if they have instructions for configuring your drive under Linux?
