bad eid??
I am trying to install ClarkConnect, a Linux gateway/server on an old PC. I think I may be in a little bit over my head, but that's ok . It boots off a cd.

The first time it booted, it said "Kernel Panic: Aiee! Killing Interupt Handler!" and caps and scroll lock started flashing on the keyboard.

The next time it booted, it said "Abnormal termination: received signal 11" or something like that.

The next time it booted it said something about a bad EID value, and caps lock and scroll lock started flashing.

So far I've removed a PCI device and freed an IRQ reserved for legacy devices, none of which I'm using at the moment.
The machine is a Dell XPS 450-- 450MHz PIII, 224MB RAM, 3 (formerly 4) PCI ethernet cards, and an ATI Rage 8MB AGP video card, can't remember exact model at the moment.

Help! Can anyone tell me what any of these error messages mean?

forgot to mention, it boots off the CD fine. It takes me to a screen, where I can install CLarkConnect (I got all those error messages after selecting this) or I can Recover or something like that. That fails when it tries to mount my windows FS, which the standard installation is supposed to take care of. If it worked.

Well, I can give you a little information, anyway ...

A signal 11 is a segmentation fault, the Linux equivalent of a general protection fault (GPF) in Windoze. This basically means that the program blew up when it attempted to access a protected area of memory. Your "bad EID" message may be complaining about an invalid effective user-id, although this is just a guess on my part. Since the errors are not consistent, I'd suspect that you have a corrupt installation CD. If you downloaded ClarkConnect, did you verify the checksum before burning it? If not, and you still have the image handy, you might use the md5sum command to generate the checksum of your downloaded image and compare the result with the checksum published at the ClarkConnect site. If they don't match, your download was not error-free (happens more often than people realize). If the checksums don't match, there's not much choice except to re-download, verify and (assuming checksums match) re-burn.

Hope this helps.

I didn't verify the checksum before burning...I'm not sure how.
What do I use to check it? I've still got the iso image, and I've got the md5 with and without the checksum off the C.C. site.

the checksum on the site matches the checksum of the ISO.
I downloaded the GNU port for windows of the md5sum command, and used that. Got it from ipcop.com

Did you verify the cd?

That and question.... have you tried ripping it down to everything basic (like i'd remove the video card... even running x you wont need that for a micro router.) All you really need is the NIC(s) a hard drive and the ram. Has this machine worked well before?

This machine has been running reliably for a long time. sometimes, though, the bios resets itself, and sometimes it doesn't recognize the HD when it boots. I will try a different computer as soon as I can. It might have to wait til the weekend
I didn't veryfy the cd [hits his head] will do.
I need the vid card for install, need the HD, and need Cd drive.
I've disabled L2 cache on the processor, disable the com and parallel ports, disabled sound, disable usb.
I've already taken out ALL of the NICs to see if it was one of them. I've swapped 4 sticks of RAM around, and had the same problem no matter which one/combo I used.

Ok, i doubt the L2 went. So, yo ucan probably renable that. So your system dosen have onboard vid??

Ummm.... perhaps an old 200 would serve you better. You can make a damn nice linux or freebsd system with those specs.

my choices are the one i'm using or a PIII 733. I've nearly given up on the one i'm using now. I will try the other computer as soon as possible. If I get the same error, I'm gonna go with a different program.

Oh yeah...just before I get the errors, a whole bunch of things like these come up...

<0x893430239><1c564398234>

many, many, many of those. They flash all over the screen. characters inside the carats every time.

RIght... that points me to a problem with the video card.... especialy if they are all over the screen. Once i had the same type of problem, because Linux uses more demanding drivers, and flaws come out much much earlier with Linux than with windows. They are also worse usually just because the driver demands near perfection...

well, it'll work....someday

It's still fighting me...It just won't connect to my main comp!! My main computer has winxp, and it keeps saying a network cable is unplugged, even though it's not!! I've got 4 of the same ethernet cards jammed in the server, maybe it's getting confused I'll try taking a few out, and see what happens.
