I currently have Mandrake Linux 9.2 on my back-up hard drive, but i want to put windows 98 on it. when every i insert the disk it says that the drive is locked by a password (im guessing because of the root password). i have not idea how to get it off and install windows. My friend installed it on there and i have very little experience with it so i dont know what to do. The reason i need to uninstall it is because i can not find a modem driver for my win modem. Does anyone know how to either uninstall it, or find drivers for a win modem?

Before you can find a driver for you winmodem you need to know what chipset it is using,this could be either a lucient chip, a connext chip or maybe a 3comm chip or some other. Some chipsets are supported some are not,I was able to get a lucient chip to work on a dell laptop but the same lucient chip would not work on a desktop with the same driver. You can check at linmodems.org for some info. As for removing mandrake, you will need a win 98 boot disk to remove the boot loader.just search this site for info on how to go about it. Get the disk utilities from the hard drive manufacturor and use it to format the backup drive.Here's some links:

Maxtor MaxBlast3
Samsung shdiag
They include drive integrity checking,partitioning and formatting,and old-to-new-hard drive copying utilities.

I tried using the Maxtor disk, but the disk drive always fails to read it whenever the linux hard drive is being used, so im pretty much stuck at that point. Whenever i use my other windows 98 hard drive the disk drive works fine. Any ideas?

Your supposed to boot the computer with the floppy and then choose the drive you want to format.Did you do this?:

Download the file maxblast3.exe diskette creator to your Windows Desktop. Note: The maxblast3.exe file is too large for download to floppy diskettes.

To create the Bootable MaxBlast 3 Floppy Diskette:

1. After downloading, double click on the maxblast3.exe diskette creator icon.
2. Insert a new formatted floppy diskette into the A:\ drive.

When the program opens select Continue
