Hello-
This is my first time installing RH 9, and I'm having a problem installing the system. I get through all the pre-installation stages easily, however, when the Package Installer starts, either in GUI or text-based installation mode, the installation freezes at Package 101, "bind-utils-9.2.1-16". The summary for this Package says "Utilities for querying DNS name servers." I've tried three times, and keep coming up with the same problem. I have tried changing the cd's, and the check sums are all correct. Nothing is helping me out.

I'm going to try to restart the installation, and I'm going to try to exclude this Package, however, I know that the need DNS for networking support, so if I exclude this particular DNS package, will it stop me from being able to network?

Any help would be much appreciated!

I suspect you will be fine if you skip this package (however, see disclaimer, below). The bind utility is required only if you wish to run your own nameserver; you can access the net (and your local network) without bind. There may also be other, related utilities included in the package such as dig, nslookup, etc. -- also not required to access the internet, but possibly useful if you wish to find out information about other sites (mostly of interest to sysadmins/webmasters). Disclaimer: I am not running RedHat, so I can't be certain about the package contents. However, my Slackware distribution includes bind, dig, host, nslookup, nsupdate and several libraries and associated man pages -- none of which are required for internet access.

Your error may be a media error (did you compare checksums from the CD after you burned it or just from the downloaded .iso file?).
