broadband speed
Hello everyone : I did a quick search for my question and didn't come uo with anything I could use so I thought I'd ask. I just recently got broadband cable installed and after an afternoon of getting my nic card and modem working I was wondering how do I test my speeds on mandrake 9.1 . I know it's running pretty fast but how do I tell how fast. But I guess after years of dial-up, and connecting at anywhere from 9600 to 31200 depending on the weather, anything looks good.

http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ is very popular , here are my results with cable :

Speed
3.7 megabits per second

Communications 3.7 megabits per second
Storage 450.8 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 2.3 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

You can also go to Speed Guide , and scroll to their " tweaking forum " to speed up your broadband . The link i posted for the speed test , is only good for three a month so run a test now and again after some " tweaks " from the Speed Guide forum.

You will have to start a thread posting your system and settings before they can adjust any settings for you .

...........good luck

Thanks for the help everyone , I tried both of those links and got responses that said I was avergeing 500 kbits per sec. which it said for my neck of the woods was not bad. It said I was downloading a 1 mb file in 16 seconds, which I thought was freakin fantastic since I used to do that in 6minutes. So I guess I'm O K with that. Thanks again for the info, I really appreciate it.

Your welcome ...... Did you happen to try out the http://forums.speedguide.net/ for some settings tweaks. I have used some myself and my speeds have increased from approx. 1.8 mps to the random test i posted earlier which is 3.7 mps. Remember speed increases are dependant on your ISP , so everybodies results are different .
